I am writing to ask you to take a stand to protect one of Idaho’s most precious natural resources – Teton Canyon. The state water study to begin in 2010 will look at storage options in Teton Canyon, including rebuilding Teton Dam, but this irreplaceable resource has recreational, cultural and ecological values far beyond what a dammed reservoir would provide. Teton Canyon, a stronghold for native Yellowstone cutthroat trout and a critical winter refuge for wildlife, is a candidate for Wild and Scenic River status. Rebuilding Teton Dam has been studied several times and the cost-benefit numbers never add up—it’s time to put this big, bad idea to rest, once and for all. Rebuilding Teton doesn’t make sense, especially considering that there are a host of alternatives that are safer, more cost-effective, faster to implement, and better for our natural resources—alternatives such as aquifer recharge, water banking, municipal conservation and irrigation upgrades and efficiencies. The state’s study must include a thorough consideration of these options. There are better ways to meet Idaho’s water needs. Please do what’s right to protect this wild canyon for future generations.
